Match 11.
Portu-Goal Scorers

P-GS vs. "Granville Glory"

After a hectic week of assessments, and another to come, many of the P-GS were using the game as a break from regular study, for a bit of fun. Someone forgot to tell the boys from Granville Glory that however, as they came out thrashing in an extra violent and aggressive game.

After losing to the Glory in round 2 of this competition (2-1), the Scorers were keen to show the skill that had seen them on a streak of wins and almost guaranteed a spot in the finals. They established dominance early on, charging out to a commanding lead, and demonstrating a stunning array of skill. Although missing both Jang and Julian, the boys showed a great amount of stamina, pushing hard for the bonus point right through to the end. In a truly team rounded performance, every man scored 2 goals, except Michaelides in goals (obviously) and Kunz, who picked up a hatrick to raise his total scored to 15, at over 1.5 goals a match.

Never did the Scorers look challenged in a truly polished performance. Michaelides in goals primarily took on the job of 'supporter' rather than 'keeper,' as the opportunity to save goals rarely arose due to stunning defensive play. It was a day where everything seemed to click, and almost too good to be true. Despite his extremely long hair, Sticka's vision from defense and eye in attack was not distracted, securing 2 goals. D'silva also grabbed a brace in a fine performance, covering all facets of the game. And in one of the many highlights of the match, this reporter must compliment Mackay's efforts in volleying a sublime Lam ball through the defense. Not often do I praise his ability, but today, his shot was hit so sweetly off the volley that no keeper could have saved it. Despite my praise, this was probably a fluke, or at least due in some part to the perfection of the ball played through by Brendan. I doubt he will hit another this season. I say this, not because I believe his luck will run out, and flukish ability leave, but because of what ensued.

An extremely malicious Glory boy, frustrated with the 9-0 score line lashed out and despite the ball being no where near his foot, cracked Mackay in the instep, causing extreme ligament damage to his ankle. (read more here)

Team doctors are unsure of how long Paul will be out for, but one thing is certain; this type of play and indeed his injury are unnecessary, and unwanted in the game. Nothing was achieved by this violent play, and nothing will be. Now Mackay, facing intensive physiotherapy treatment will miss the crunch match with competition leaders, the Importz, and perhaps longer.

Despite the obvious disappointment in losing Paul, team officials were happy with the game, "We played extremely well today, and gelled beautifully. I am particularly happy with D'Silva's performance, who truly earned his spot today with 2 great goals. Playing this way gives us the confidence we need to get over teams like the Importz. Of course we are disappointed about losing Paul, however I think it is of benefit to the team to not have someone of his uncoordinated caliber on the field, spoiling opportunities we need to secure. To tell the truth, I think he is soft and does not really have a problem."

Next week, the Importz, and a very tough game to close off 2003. Whichever way it goes, the Scorers are looking good running into the finals, and have the potential to go all the way.
