Match 7.
Portu-Goal Scorers

P-GS vs. "The Pink Deroettes"

Fans of the P-GS may have to look twice and the scoreboard of this one and think back to the pre-game hype in disbelief. This was a match to be used as a training ground for new tactics and formations, certainly not one the team contemplated losing. So confident were the Scorers of the win, that in-form players such as D'Silva, Jang, Julian and Michaelides were rested. What transpired however was very different.

Only 2 weeks ago, the Scorers faced the highly fancied "Red Deros" in a match that will always be remembered. But even this win seemed more assured than that of today's game. The Deros' counterparts, the "The Pink Deroettes" took the P-GS all the way, causing much distress; as with only 2 minutes on the clock and the score 7-6, it could have gone either way. The skill and commitment of the boys shone through, and they escaped, luckily. Perhaps this performance was due to the relatively easy game the week prior, but either way, the Scorers have learnt a valuable lesson, and this will be a game that will serve as a reminder that they are much less than invincible.

Providing comic relief in the midst of a tough game was Mackay's abysmal efforts in goals. Most keepers will start their training with basic ball handling, or shot stopping techniques. Mackay should get right back to basics though; that is, facing the right way. Off a Deroettes kick off, he was found to be turned around in the goals, and so when the ball came rolling towards him, we was unaware, and it went into the back of the goal. Replays still cannot decipher why he was turned around, as he seemed to be staring blankly into the distance. When asked why he was not watching the game, Mackay replied "Huh? Well I thought I was." Clearly not the smartest of players.

Lam played superbly under pressure, as critics questioned his ability to perform without his Asian counterpart - Jang. He had no problem flying the oriental flag, with another solid performance that confirms the strength in the P-GS decision to transfer him in this year.

Another good thing to come from this match was Sticka's performance. Seemingly on his game, he scored no less than 5 goals. Bizarrely, 2 of them were for the Deroettes. Despite this surprise, even the most alert of keepers could not have stopped the hammer blows he fired. Coach/Captain Kunz commented after the game, "Gavan certainly can hit the ball well, one of his shots took me completely by surprise, and rocketed into the back of the net. I have plans to spend a lot of time in theory lessons with him this week, as it is clear that he has the skill - now we simply need to make him aware that in order to win, he must put the ball in the back of the other net." It sounds all too simple - to win, put the ball in the back of the net. But that is the nature of the game, and some days it just doesn't go in.

Hopefully matches such as this will improve the Scorers, so come finals time, they will have no worries finding the correct net, or facing the right direction.
